Morocco from USA: Direct Flights, Visa, and Best 2026 Routes

By Moroccan Guide AIMay 2026·8 min read

New nonstop routes Newark-Marrakech and Casablanca-Los Angeles changed everything for US travellers. Here is the practical 2026 guide.

Morocco from USA: Direct Flights, Visa, and Best 2026 Routes

Until 2024, getting from the United States to Morocco meant a connection in Paris, Madrid, or Frankfurt. In 2026, that has changed. United Airlines opened the Newark-Marrakech direct route in late 2024. Royal Air Maroc launched Casablanca-Los Angeles in 2025. Boston-Casablanca and JFK-Casablanca are operating year-round. Morocco is the new Mediterranean for US travellers, and the math has changed.

The 2026 direct routes from the USA

From the East Coast: New York JFK to Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc, daily, ~7h). Newark to Marrakech (United, 4 weekly, ~7h45). Boston to Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc, 4 weekly, ~7h). Washington-Dulles to Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc, 3 weekly).

From the West Coast: Los Angeles to Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc, 4 weekly, ~12h). This is a game-changer for California travellers — same flight time as LA-London.

From the Midwest: still requires a connection (typically through New York, Paris, or Lisbon).

Visa requirements for US passport holders

American citizens do NOT need a visa for stays under 90 days. You arrive, present your passport (which must be valid for 6+ months), get a tourist stamp, and you are in. There is no e-visa form to fill in advance, no fees, no embassy visit. Bring the address of your first night's accommodation — they may ask for it on the arrival form.

Best time for Americans to visit

April-May or September-October are gold-standard. East Coast travellers have an easy 6-7 hour flight (similar to flying to California from New York). West Coast travellers face the same ~12 hour flight as LA-London, but there is a 8-hour time difference — plan a recovery day.

Avoid: July-August (Marrakech is 40°C+, brutal for first-time visitors). December 20-January 2 (peak European holiday, riads are full and expensive). Ramadan (mid-February to mid-March 2026 — restaurants close during the day, rhythm is unusual).

Cost reality check

Morocco is significantly cheaper than Italy, Spain, France, or anywhere in the Caribbean. A 10-day trip for two Americans, including direct flights from Newark, comfortable riads, a private driver for the Sahara segment, and meals out, runs around $4,500-$6,500 per couple. Same trip in Italy: $9,000-$13,000.

Recommended 8-day Morocco from USA

Day 1: Land Casablanca, train to Marrakech (3h on Al Boraq high-speed). Days 2-3: Marrakech medina + Atlas day trip. Days 4-5: Sahara overnight via private driver. Days 6-7: Train to Fez, two days exploring. Day 8: Drive to Chefchaouen, then back to Casablanca for return flight. This is the standard route we book for American couples.

Practical tips Americans miss

Tipping: 10-15% in restaurants, 5-10 dirhams for valet/porter. ATMs are everywhere, take out 1,500 dirhams at a time (about $150). The dirham is non-convertible — exchange leftovers at the airport before leaving. Most riads accept Visa/Mastercard. WiFi is solid. The Maroc Telecom SIM at the airport ($5 for 10GB) saves you from international roaming. Drinking water: bottled only.

American Express works at upmarket places but is widely declined; Visa and Mastercard are the standards. American outlets (Type A) do not work — bring a Type C/E adapter (the European two-pin).

Morocco from the USA in 2026 is genuinely easier and cheaper than Italy. The new direct flights have removed the only friction. If you have been thinking about going, this is the moment.

United's Newark-Marrakech and Royal Air Maroc's Casablanca-LA routes have made Morocco the new Mediterranean for US travellers.
